Why text and how text?
Heylo, nice people of the internet.
I've always enjoyed reading blogs. And I've always aspired to write some. I like computers beeping and booping. Humans aren't boring either... So here goes my i+1th attempt at blogging, about beeping devices, and possibly sometimes about organic matters that don't beep.
I do not want to directly start this blog with "How to deploy your app under 10 minutes on a bare VPS" or "How software has changed in the last 6 months and what the experts are saying about that"... (Though ironically, I am planning to write in both of those directions)
Therefore, decided to start a bit more humanly, a bit less beepi boopi 🤖
Why I did try multiple times but fail to write?
I guess we all have some mental blockers, mine were mostly:
- Do I REALLY have something to say?
- Does it really interest people ?
- What if the readers are laughing while reading?
After serious considerations on the matter with myself, I have decided on the following answers to the questions.
Do I really have something to say?
Apparently, I do! Everyone does actually. That is why I read posts on social media, other people's blogs etc. I do not want to know only what this "EXPERT" thinks, I also want to know what others think. I am one of the others for some people too...
Does it really interest people?
If it interests one person, and if it can teach/inspire/make angry (😇) one person... I guess that is enough. Who knows if I find internet friends who are interested in the same topics... Or internet enemies. All not-equally welcome.
What if readers are laughing while reading?
Joke's on them... They are behind the WAF! As everyone knows, WAFs terminate SSL and mean people 😢
As you can see, convincing myself didn't take long, so here we are.
Why text? Why a blog? Why not vlogs or podcast?
Well, easy answer: bcs that's what cool kids are doing dummy 🏄️
A slightly mature version of the same answer: Videos and podcasts are inherently broken for some people including me. They force you to their mental model of comprehension, their speed of information transfer... If you want to skim, good luck. If you want to go back and re-read some of the other stuff... Also hard. Videos are just... weird. Very inefficient information transfer method for knowledge. Text is still the king. Will be the king. Text ---🖤---> Me
On top of it all, since the early internet days, there is a mysterious wish to own a small cozy part of the internet, mostly with blogs. Just feels... so nice. It might be just the territorial instincts we have... (Maybe blogging is nothing more than just pissing on a tree)
PERSONAL-LY IM-PORTANT MATTERS
There is a REALLY important aspect to text for me now. Since 2023-ish... No AI. I don't want to read or write any AI ideas. When I read or think about writing with AI, or having them edit my text... I get pukish. I am not a native English speaker, and my English is not the best, yet I think you can get me most of the time. I don't get myself 100% of the time, and I am doing very OK. You should be fine too if you decide to read. I still grammar check with LLMs, but just to manually fix a couple of misspellings, one or two mistakenly used words, that is all. It is really not that different from what we used to have with non-AI spellcheckers.
A quick wish... If you read any of my posts (this is the first one, but hope doesn't stay that way), feel free to reach out to tell me what did you think about it:
